In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, "Star Wars" actress Daisy Ridley opens up about her starring role and executive producing the upcoming film "Young Woman and the Sea." The film chronicles the true story of Trudy Ederle, the first woman to swim across the English Channel.
Ridley reveals that she underwent extensive training to prepare for the role, including swimming for hours each day and learning how to hold her breath for extended periods of time. She also had to gain weight for the part, which was a challenge for her as she is naturally thin.
In addition to the physical challenges of the role, Ridley also had to deal with the emotional toll of playing Ederle. Ederle was a determined and courageous woman, and Ridley wanted to do her justice. She says she was inspired by Ederle's story and hopes that the film will inspire others.
"I think Trudy's story is so important because it shows what women are capable of," Ridley says. "She was told that she couldn't do it, but she didn't listen. She went out there and proved everyone wrong." Ridley hopes that the film will inspire others to pursue their dreams, no matter what obstacles they may face. She says, "I hope that people will see this film and be inspired by Trudy's story. I hope it will show them that anything is possible if you set your mind to it."
